Karthik Menta, a graduate of Paint Branch High School, was selected to play in the Wal-Mart First Tee Open at Pebble Beach over the Labor Day weekend. The tournament is televised nationally on the Golf Channel. Menta, is one of 48 young men nationwide who earned a spot at the official Champions Tour event. The First Tee is a World Golf Foundation initiative dedicated to providing young people of all backgrounds an opportunity to develop, through golf and character education, life-enhancing values such as honesty, integrity and sportsmanship."Using the game of golf as a platform to teach young people how to be successful on and off the course is a unique way of engaging our youngsters in a fun and challenging sport, and the First Tee organization provides an opportunity to youngsters who might not otherwise have access to the game," said County Executive Isaiah Leggett. "I join many others in Montgomery County in expressing my pride in Karthik Menta's accomplishment of being selected to compete in this prestigious and popular event on the PGA Tour."

Menta will be attending the University of Maryland in College Park this fall. As a member of The First Tee's 2009 Scholars class, he was awarded a partial four-year scholarship through The First Tee's named scholars program.
