Over 300 people gathered late last month at the Georgetown University Hotel and Conference Center to celebrate the 95th anniversary of the chartering of the Washington DC Alumnae Chapter (WDCAC) of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated.

Attendees were greeted by an exhibition of notable Deltas in WDCAC prepared by the chapter’s Heritage and Archives Committee and treated to a special display highlighting the Washington, D.C. Alumnae Foundation and others.

Lead by Mistress of Ceremonies, Marjorie A. Kinard, local neo jazz band entertained the crowd Jazzy Blu. Also part of the program was Rev. Matthew Watley of Reid Temple A.M.E. Church and Lonnie G. Bunch, III, founding director of the Smithsonian National Museum of African-American History and Culture. To celebrate the historical opening, WDCAC donated $5,000 to the museum thereby becoming a sponsor.

WDCAC honored each living past chapter president with a special video presentation including fireside chat style interviews. Several Delta dignitaries were in attendance including: National Secretary, Cheryl A. Hickmon; 16th National President, Dr. Thelma T. Daley; Eastern Regional Representative, Naya Frazier; D.C. State Coordinator, Sharon L. Williams Jackson; and D.C. State Facilitator, Bi’Anncha Andrews.

WDCAC was chartered on February 3, 1921 in Washington, D.C. by nine women including two founders and is the second graduate chapter in Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.’s history. Over the past 95 years, WDCAC has contributed greatly to the District of Columbia by founding several auxiliary organizations targeted at addressing specific concerns such as literacy and affordable housing.

Over the years, WDCAC has awarded nearly $1 million in scholarships to local youth including establishing a STEM scholarship in 2013 in honor of Delta’s 22nd National President and former WDCAC President, Rev. Dr. Gwendolyn E. Boyd.
