Montgomery County’s African American Health Program (AAHP), in collaboration with Health Freedom, Inc. and Maryland National Capital Park and Planning will host the 12th annual Health Freedom Walk: A Path to Wellness Celebration Walk and the grand opening of the Woodlawn Visitor Center Saturday, June 11 at the Woodlawn Manor Cultural Park in Silver Spring. The event will take place rain or shine.

The three-mile walk will begin at 9 a.m. and will be followed by interactive activities for children, including crafts and living history demonstrations, as well as guided hikes on the Underground Railroad and health screenings and literature. The Washington Revels’ Jubilee Voices will perform following the walk. Walk participants will also have free entry to the new visitor’s center, which includes multimedia exhibits.

The event is an innovative project to promote increased physical activity while making creative use of Maryland’s integral role in the Underground Railroad. The walk will give participants an opportunity to learn about Maryland’s important role in the Underground Railroad, while enjoying a morning of physical activity with friends and family.

The goal of the event is to encourage communities to free themselves from the bondage of a sedentary lifestyle and become more physically active.

“If slaves could walk thousands of miles for freedom, surely people today can walk 30 minutes a day to free themselves of poor health habits and get themselves on a path to a healthier lifestyle,” said Jeanne Charleston, founder of Health Freedom, Inc. “By taking the first step, individuals can begin their personal journey to wellness and potentially live healthier lives.”

Registration begins at 8 a.m. at the Woodlawn Manor Cultural Park located at 16501 Norwood Road in Sandy Spring.

Registration fees are $15 per person and free for children 10 years of age and younger. Registration is available the day of the event. Registration fees include a medallion, t-shirt, musical entertainment and healthy treats. All proceeds collected support the Maryland Health Freedom Walk.
