Montgomery County Honors a True Community Servant at Annual Juneteenth Celebration

On June 17, 2016

Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett will host the County’s 20th Annual Juneteenth Celebration on Friday, June 17, at the BlackRock Center for the Arts, 12901 Town Commons Drive, Germantown. Doors open at 6 p.m. and seating is limited.

This year’s celebration will include the presentation of the 2nd Annual African American Living Legend Award to Delores Lincoln-Willis. Ms. Lincoln Willis dedicated her life to service and selfless acts of kindness to the community. The Montgomery County, Potomac Valley Section of the National Council of Negro Women, Inc. nominated Ms. Lincoln Willis for her work as an organizer, mentor, photographer, philanthropist and a true servant.

In addition to the award presentation, a special presentation of a Heritage Montgomery’s Documentary Community Cornerstones will be shown. In addition, the program will feature recording artist Ronnie Diamond Hoard, Stellar Award nominee and former lead singer for the Emmy Award winning 70’s Soul/Funk group the Ohio Players as well as medal winners from the Montgomery County Branch NAACP ACT-SO Achievement Program. After the program as an added bonus this year there will be a special presentation of the film RACE, the incredible true story of Gold Medal Legend Jesses Owens.

Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, the day Union Major General Gordon Granger announced the news in Galveston, Texas; one of the last outpost of the United States that the end of slavery had come to all that were enslaved in the Slaved States. This marked one of critical steps in the full implementation of the Emancipation Proclamation signed into existence by President Abraham Lincoln, January 1, 1863. The program is being coordinated by the Montgomery County Office of Human Rights and the County Executive’s African American Advisory Group.

Admission is free and a traditional Juneteenth barbeque dinner will be served following the program. For more information, call 240-777-8450.
