DHCD and DDOT to dedicate $4.4 million in public street improvements in Ward 8

On July 14, 2016

The DC Department of Housing and Community Development and the District Department of Transportation have entered into a collaborative agreement under which they will complete up to $4.4 million in public improvement projects on designated streets in the Congress Heights, Fairlawn and Garfield Heights neighborhoods of the District.

More than 30 projects along 15 streets have been scheduled. DHCD will make available Community Development Block Grant funding to DDOT for several improvement projects, which include pavement restoration; repair or replacement of curbs, sidewalks and gutters; and construction of wheelchair/bicycle ramps.

“In addition to preserving and producing affordable housing, revitalizing neighborhoods is another important mission of our agency,” said DHCD Director Polly Donaldson. “We are pleased that under this agreement with DDOT, we can make needed improvements that will make it easier, and safer, for residents to navigate within their communities.”

“This is a great example of District government working cooperatively to enhance the quality of life for residents,” said DDOT Director Leif Dormsjo. “Thanks to our partnership with DHCD and the block grant funding we will be able to make infrastructure improvements in traditionally underserved communities.”
