Metro Brief: Chuck Brown, Jim Vance help celebrate top DCPS staff

The second annual A Standing Ovation for DC Teachers event takes place on Sept. 19, 2011, at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Hosted by DC Public Education Fund (the Education Fund), Standing Ovation brings together the Washington, D.C., community, including leaders in the philanthropic, civic, and business communities to salute DC Public Schools (DCPS) teachers and principals receiving the ranking of highly effective on the 2010-2011 IMPACT educator evaluations.

"Great teachers can make all the difference in a child's education," said

Grammy Award-winning recording artist and philanthropist, John Legend, "But too often those teachers are not celebrated for their hard work and commitment to student achievement. They deserve to be recognized for their efforts in the classroom."

For the second year, A Standing Ovation for DC Teachers is hosted by NBC4's Jim Vance, and produced by award-winning director and producer, George Stevens, Jr.

Standing Ovation is the highlight of the Education Fund's year-round efforts to help DCPS build the strongest educator workforce in the nation. This year's featured performer is Grammy Award-winning recording artist and philanthropist, John Legend.

In addition, Emmy Award-winning actress, Alfre Woodard, and Georgetown University Men's Basketball Coach John Thompson III, and Chuck Brown, the "godfather of go-go" will participate in the program.

"The civic and business communities are critical to the success of Standing Ovation, and the larger mission of recognizing, rewarding, and retaining the best teachers in our schools," said Cate Swinburn, executive director of the Education Fund, "The personal and financial investments made by these organizations and individuals highlights the huge priority our city places on building a great school system"
