  • Locals set to celebrate “DC Residents Day” at new MLK memorial

The District of Columbia warmly welcomes the world to the nation's capital for a week of dedication events surrounding the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial with the help of the MLK, Jr. National Memorial Foundation.

"We embrace Dr. King's declaration that ‘now is the time to make real the promise of democracy' and ‘…to make justice and freedom a reality for all citizens in the District of Columbia' by promoting awareness of the District's struggle for self-determination, autonomy and statehood through the DC Full Democracy Freedom March. It will symbolize our desire and hope to enjoy the same freedom and democracy as other Americans," the Foundation stated.

The Foundation hopes to connect District residents to the historical significance of the dedication with a special "DC Residents' Day at the Memorial" on Tuesday, August 23, 2011, from 8 am to 10 pm.

Residents and visitors are also invited to take advantage of the various dedication programs being offered by The Martin Luther King, Jr. Library, including film showings, exhibits and a speaker series.
