Flowers ends Roosevelt's quest for perfect season

On December 5, 2011

On Saturday, November 12, the Charles H. Flowers High School football team avenged an 8th week loss to Roosevelt, defeating the unbeaten Raiders 13-8. The Jaguars swarming defensive pressure harassed Raiders QB Shawn Petty all afternoon, forcing multiple turnovers.

"We wanted to keep him in the pocket," said Flowers head coach Michael Mayo on their defensive strategy. "We wanted to squeeze the pocket on him and we were able to come up with some sacks."

Flowers found the end zone in the 1st quarter, scoring on a 9-yard Jonathan Holland run. Penalties and turnovers killed any momentum Roosevelt tried to build on the ground. The visiting Jaguars took a 7-0 lead into halftime.

Roosevelt scored in the 3rd quarter on a tough 17-yard run by quarterback Shawn Petty. Chris McDowell added two points to give Roosevelt their first lead of the game at 8-7.

Shawn Elliot picked off a loose Shawn Petty pass with 59 seconds left in the 3rd quarter.

Five minutes into the fourth, Holland hit a streaking Keith Payne for the touchdown. Flowers took the lead, 13-8 and leaned on their defense to close the game.

On November 19, Flowers travels to Suitland to face the 10-1 Rams. Freddie Allen/DMVAS/District Chronicles
