Four residents of the Eastland Gardens neighborhood, a Ward 7 community tucked alongside the National Aquatic Gardens in northeast Washington, DC, have published a book on the community's history featuring prominent residents, the legacy of African-American architects and more.

The book, "Images of America: Eastland Gardens" was compiled and written by members of the Eastland Gardens Flower Club, a 56-year-old organization dedicated to beautifying the quiet community betwixt Deanwood and the border of Prince George's County. The book was published by Arcardia Publishing which has helped Washington, DC, neighborhoods, and other neighborhoods across the country publish pictorial histories about community gems.

Images and stories featured in the book include that of the first Black police commander, Owen Davis; the pioneer residents of Eastland Gardens; the eradication of the Benning Racetrack which made room for the 295 highway and the integration of Kenilworth Elementary School.

Authors and residents, Althia Harris, Regina King, Javier Barker and Zerline Hughes are excited to put Eastland Gardens, a historically and predominately Black neighborhood on the map.

"Many people don't even know that Eastland Gardens exists," said Eastland Gardens Flower Club President Barker. "Now, with this book, they will understand our rich history, visit us and appreciate what we are all doing to maintain this Washington, DC gem."

The book is available for 21.99 from the Eastland Gardens Flower Club and can delivered locally with no fee by calling Club president at 202.365.5492 or For more information on the book, go to It is also available on
