The Capital Bikeshare system hit 1 million rides last week during its first anniversary. When an annual user checked out a bike at 16th and U Streets, NW and docked it about 15 minutes later at Lamont and Mount Pleasant Streets, it turned out to be the 1 millionth trip logged on a Capital Bikeshare bike since the District and Arlington launched the system on September 20, 2010.

Also, since that first day, Theodore Melahropoulos has taken the most trips by a Bikeshare member, 1,258 – an average of more than 3 a day – setting a one-year mark that could be hard to beat.

Both winners were honored at the Capital Bikeshare Birthday Bash at The Yards Park last week. With more than 18,000 members and 1 million total rides, Capital Bikeshare has doubled the initial projections for the system. Project managers were aiming to attract 8,000 members in the first year and hoped they would take 500,000 rides. Capital Bikeshare has quickly become a successful addition to the District and Arlington's myriad transportation options over the past 12 months, as an inexpensive and reliable choice for residents, visitors and employees. The system currently boasts 116 stations and 1,100 bikes with more than 60 new stations planned in the next six months.

The Massachusetts Ave & Dupont Circle NW station saw the most activity since the system's debut in 2010, with over 40,000 trips originating from that point. Capital Bikeshare currently averages more than 4,000 trips a day, system-wide, and the Fourth of July holds the record for the highest daily usage, with 6,077 trips taken.

The full press release is also available on the Capital Bikeshare website.

Capital Bikeshare is the product of a unique public/private partnership between DDOT, Arlington County and Alta Bike Share. The two jurisdictions worked closely with Alta Bicycle Share to develop the program in the fall of 2010, offering regional service with 1,100 bikes and 116 stations. Based on the initial success of the program, both jurisdictions plan to add additional stations and bicycles to the system in the coming months. For more information about Capital Bikeshare, visit
