Metro Brief: Roosevelt student wins NAACP scholarshop for culinary skills

On August 17, 2011

Roosevelt High School senior Dominique Mitchell won the silver medal in the Entrepreneurship/Culinary Arts section of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) ACT-SO Awards and a $5,000 scholarship to any Art Institutes school nationwide.

This was the second year that Roosevelt High school students participated in the ACT-SO Culinary Arts/Entrepreneurship category. The dedicated students from Roosevelt spearheaded this mentoring partnership with Sodexo and Hyatt Hotels over the past two years. The Entrepreneurship/Culinary competition is now deemed an official category for all future ACT-SO events.

Mitchell won with an Indian-inspired menu featuring curried duck with cucumber salad and roti. Rice pudding with raisins and almonds was served for dessert.
