On Saturday, the holiday season will be heralded in by a new 12-foot inflatable turkey leading the Montgomery County Thanksgiving Parade.

Beginning at 10am, the 17th Annual Thanksgiving Parade will step off from Ellsworth Drive and Fenton Street in Silver Spring and proceed south on Georgia Avenue, ending at Silver Spring Avenue.

The line-up of over 100 parade units will feature the inflatable turkey, which is the Montgomery County parade logo, a 12-foot inflatable Silver Spring penguin, a teddy bear toy float, and more drum lines and colorful dancing groups than revelers have ever seen before.

ABC 7 Meteorologist Brian Van de Graaff and NewsChannel 9 anchor Kellye Lynn, will serve as the emcees, introducing glittering floats; a wide variety of high school, college, and professional marching bands, beauty queens, clowns, fire engines, performing dogs and rescue animal groups.

As always, the parade will end with Santa’s float playing holiday music and featuring the bearded and rosy-cheeked man in the red suit.

Parade organizers are looking for volunteers to be elves and pilgrims on floats, reindeer and penguins in the parade, or to lead balloons. Those interested, ages 13 and older, will suit up in costume and ride on the floats.  Organizers are also looking for volunteers to act as unit leaders, and to be inflatable and balloon handlers.

The hours for volunteers will be from 7:30am to 1:30pm on Saturday. Volunteers are to meet at the Silver Spring Civic Building at One Veterans Place at Ellsworth Drive and Fenton Street.

For those driving to the parade, the northbound lanes of Georgia Avenue, from East-West Highway to Colesville Road will close at 7 a.m. and re-open after the conclusion of the parade around 1 p.m.

Free parking will be available in the public garages, including the Sligo Avenue Garage and the Bonifant Street Garage next to the Metro. The Ellsworth Town Center garage will be closed that day. Parade goers are encouraged to take Metro’s red line to the Silver Spring station, just west of Georgia Avenue, across from the Discovery building.

The Town Center public parking garage at Ellsworth Drive will close at 2 a.m. Saturday morning to accommodate the parade. Broadcasting live on News Channel 8, the parade will re-air several times on Thanksgiving Day.
